The Last Time

One of my favorite places to unwind and enjoy nature is by Lake Harriet a small lake here on the edge of Ouachita Hills campus. I used to love walking around it or hanging my hammock beside it. I don't remember when I was able to walk around it last, probably a couple years ago. I sure miss it.

The other day I was just lying here trying to picture every detail I remember of walking around the lake. What it felt like and looked like… the sun shimmering off the water, the blue, cloudless sky, the gentle wind blowing my hair, beautiful yellow wildflowers by its bank, our energetic dog racing on ahead, walking up the little hill to see the picturesque spot where our son-in-law proposed to our daughter… I didn't know the last time I walked around it would more than likely be the last time.

Similarly, I remember the last time I drove my electric chair down the tree lined dirt road to the river near our house. It was a gorgeous Spring day and I was with our daughter Hannah. I wish I had a picture of us by the edge of the flowing water.  But, I didn't know it was the last time.

Today is a beautiful fall day. Bethany showed me gorgeous pictures from her walk this morning. The morning sun shining through the mist and trees making a golden reflection on the  pond behind our house. Oh, what I would give to have just one more walk through the woods and around Lake Harriet, basking in the freedom of mobility and soaking in the beauty of the morning! My desire is almost tangible this morning!

Reader, I encourage you to enjoy each moment, each simple pleasure, each beauty in nature, each love in your life, each accomplishment, each sunset, you never know when it might be the last time.

But I'm so thankful that our "last times" here on earth aren't really the end mark. We still have the hope of one day soon walking around the sea of glass in heaven which will be much more beautiful than Lake Harriet! Can't you picture yourself there? Can't you feel the gentle breeze blowing your hair and picture the beautiful yellow wild flowers?

All will be perfect joy and contentment, with no more last time!
